The decision to run begins with motivating yourself to run. The two key words in that last sentence are motivating and yourself. Right from the start it is the motivation that gets you moving and the determination to continue. You may become discouraged as you begin to push yourself to new distances or faster speeds. For those just beginning it may seem difficult. Running is not really that natural of an activity. There will be hardships along the way, however don’t give up; it will get easier.
Keep a positive attitude as you begin your journey. Develop a couple of long term goals, break them into smaller, more achievable goals and relish your accomplishments. Reward yourself when you reach a milestone.
Sign up for a race or a fun run. Find a local event that supports a charity or local cause and work toward that date. Make the date far enough in the future to give yourself time to build up the mileage, but soon enough to keep you motivated to train (depending on your physical ability, three to six months should be enough time).
In the beginning there is no need to go gangbusters out of the gate and risk injury, frustration or discouragement. Slow down, build up your mileage and your speed and you will find yourself enjoying your runs.
